The Complete Sugar Beet Handling Company

M&J Haulage are the complete sugar beet handling company, lifting and transporting beet from Lincolnshire and neighbouring counties into Newark Sugar Beet factory. We operate up to 20 lorries, each carrying 4 or 5 loads or 3000 tons a day.

We have developed over recent years the combinable crop contracting / farming side of the business. We operate a full range of farm and haulage equipment capable of all required arable operations. As the peak of the sugar beet work load is October to April each year we have surplus labour and machinery capacity available for the arable harvest and drilling period from July to October. We also have sufficient capacity to cover the spring workload and the fertilising / spraying requirement. Our experienced team and wide range of high output equipment is key to us providing timely field operations.

About Us/History

M&J Haulage was founded in 1998 by Mark Popplewell.  Mark worked on his father's farm from an early age and returned to the family farm after completing the Higher National Certificate in Modern Agriculture at Riseholme College. In 1997 the family decided that, as there were few prospects locally for expansion and with the low returns from farming at that time, the farm should be sold.  Mark used his share to start M&J Haulage, with sugar beet haulage being the main source of income. The business also offered arable contracting services, including combining, using the machinery retained from the original farming business.

In 2000 a used tanker harvester was purchased and the business expanded into Beet lifting.  By 2003 the business had expanded into drilling sugar beet and moved quickly into offering a full beet growing, lifting and haulage service.

We have now for many years farmed land on short and long term leases on various agreements, growing combinable crops.
